High doses of zinc can interfere with immune function (this formula has only 16 mg zinc chelate). Shils and Young report the level of zinc that interferes with copper absorption (associated with copper deficiency and anemia) is a long-term, chronic ingestion of 150 mg/day (Shils M and Young V. eds. Modern Nutrition in Health and Disease. 1988 7th ed. Lea and Febiger, Philadelphia, Pa.). Michael Murray advises against a daily intake greater than 150 mg for more than a week, but stresses that zinc supplementation can effectively enhance the immune system.
